In the Stillness

An inner joy wells up
Like the freshness
Of the autumn air.
And in the stillness of the night
I know You are there.

The joy of knowing You
Is a joy that flows
Peacefully within.

Then suddenly, a thundering crack,
A silent night no more
As the words from the cross
Flashed through my mind,
“My God, My God
Why have You forsaken me?”
Comes to shatter
The silence of my prayer.

Once and for all time
These tormented words
Were hurled into space
Capturing for man His eternal grace.

Now, in my moment of pain,
My heart silently cries,
“My God, My God,
Why have you forsaken me?”

The whys of life
Become my pain,
But the throbbing of my heart
Still beats for Him,
Because He came
In the stillness of the night.
